If anyone wants to know how Andrew Lloyd Webber feels about the Cats movie, they need not look farther than his choice of pet: A dog.
Tom Hooper’s big screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats hurt the iconic composer so much, he adopted a dog for the first time in his life. Lloyd Webber’s contributions to the world of theater are immeasurable, as he is the mastermind behind shows like Evita, The Phantom of the Opera, and, yes, Cats. The stage production, which is about a group of cats who are all vying for the opportunity to travel to the Heaviside layer for a new life, was once the longest-running show in both London and New York and won numerous awards upon its debut.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the Cats movie. Though it was directed by Oscar winner Hooper and featured the talents of those like Judi Dench, Idris Elba, Taylor Swift, and Ian McKellen, Cats was a misfire even before it arrived in theaters in late 2019. The internet took great pleasure in mocking the CGI used for the film, which attempted to make the performers look like humanoid cats. Saddled with overwhelmingly negative reviews, Cats failed to make an impression at the box office as well and only grossed $75 million worldwide.
