20th Century Studios unveils the opening scene for The Last Duel seeing Matt Damon and Adam Driver prepare for the titular battle. Based on Eric Jager’s book of the same name, the film revolves around a knight who challenges his friend and squire to a duel to the death after his wife accuses the fellow knight of raping her. Alongside Damon and Driver, the cast for The Last Duel includes Emmy winner Jodie Comer, Oscar winner Ben Affleck, Harriet Walter, Nathaniel Parker, Sam Hazeldine, Michael McElhatton, Alex Lawther and Marton Csokas.
Development on an adaptation of The Last Duel first got underway in 2015 with The Hunger Games‘ Francis Lawrence set to direct and Shaun Grant penning the script. Though this would eventually die and a new incarnation would start anew in mid 2019 when Ridley Scott signed on to direct and Affleck and Damon signed on to star and co-write the script with Nicole Holofcener. Following brief uncertainty of the film’s production due to the Disney-Fox merger, casting would move on ahead with Comer and Driver and filming would commence from February to March and would suffer an indefinite delay due to the ongoing pandemic, eventually picking back up in September and concluding in October.
