Inspired by characters created by the gothic master Tim Burton, The Nightmare Before Christmas is a 1993 stop-motion animated film that blends the macabre with cheer as it asks, “What if Halloween went Christmas?” Jack Skellington is the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, who becomes obsessed with turning the ghouls and monsters of his home into North Pole enthusiasts after accidentally landing in Christmas Town and kidnapping Santa Claus.
Tim Burton surely had an incredible if unintentional idea for mass holiday consumerism, as he inspired a film that would take over the cultural conscience from October 1 to December 25 every year. Disney won the lottery with The Nightmare Before Christmas, having the entire span of fall to release holiday-oriented merchandise on two major holidays. Outside of the movie, The Nightmare Before Christmas has spawned books, collectible card games, themed board games, comics, video games, and even live performance concerts. With all of the new creative toys and themed collectible items that are introduced year after year, there will never be a shortage of The Nightmare Before Christmas memorabilia.
